History

In an effort to address the Commonwealth's dental access problem, the Massachusetts Dental Society Foundation acquired a mobile dental van through a grant from Proctor & Gamble. The Mobile Access to Care (MAC) Van travels to communities throughout Massachusetts, targeting areas with the greatest poverty needs, and provides free screenings and comprehensive care to children. The MAC Van provides services at organizations serving children from low-income families, such as Boys & Girls Clubs, Head Start locations, selected schools, and YMCAs. The MAC Van contains two state-of-the-art equipped operatories.

In addition to providing dental services, the MAC Van gives income-eligible children a "dental home," something many children in the area need. MAC Van staff refer children seen on the MAC Van to local dentists who participate in MassHealth or MassDentists CARE programs. The MAC Van staff also provide oral health education to children and adults throughout the state.

Thank You MAC Van Volunteers!

Our volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants, and students are the key to the MAC Van's success. Because our volunteers gave a little bit of themselves, we were able to give more than 1,000 children a reason to smile.

Check out some of our volunteers in action and see the full list of the MAC Van's volunteers.

Interested in Volunteering on the MAC Van?

In February 2007, the MAC Van began bringing free dental care to the underserved children of the Commonwealth. The Van travels to each MDS district for up to three non-consecutive weeks over the course of the year.

There are two opportunities to volunteer for the MAC Van program:

  • On the MAC Van
  • Providing "dental homes" after patients are seen on the MAC Van

If you are interested in volunteering on the Van when it's in your district, please complete the Customized Volunteer Program form. In order to be able to volunteer on the MAC Van, all MAC Van dentist volunteers are required to complete the Customized Volunteer Program form and submit copies of an active Massachusetts dental license and an active malpractice binder minimum $1 million/$3 million aggregate.

Hygienist volunteers need to complete the Allied Volunteer Customization form and submit a copy of an active Massachusetts hygiene license. Auxiliary personnel need to submit a completed Allied Volunteer Customization form.

Please fax the completed forms and materials to (508) 480-0002 to the attention of Ellen Factor.

Questions? Contact Ellen Factor at (800) 342-8747, ext. 228.
